How to install Windows Operating System from USB device

With most number of users across the globe, Microsoft Windows is one of the most famous Operating System beside Mac and Linux.
In this article you will learn the way to install Windows Operating System through an USB pen drive.
Before stating step by step tutorial on Windows installation, here are some frequently asked questions:
When to install through an USB Pen Drive ?
If you don’t have a CD or DVD drive or if your optical drive isn’t bootable or is damaged and if you are using devices like Netbook which generally don’t come with a CD or DVD drive, it is useful to install Windows Operating system through a pen drive.


What are advantages of installing through pen drive ?
There are many advantages of USB based installation over a disc based operating system installation.
Fast Installation : Since USBs are faster than Optical Drives, the installation will process fastly
No or damaged optical drive : USB based installation is useful on machines like Netbooks, which generally don’t come up with an optical drive more over if your CD/DVD drive is damaged or isn’t working properly, USB installation may help you.
Convenient : Carrying an installation setup in USB is much more easier than carrying it into a disc.
Which are supported operating system ?
Although we tested installation of Windows 7 through a pen drive but it was reported to work with other versions of Windows OSs too.
What are things I need ?
You need following things:
1. Microsoft Windows installation CD or DVD
2. An USB pen drive with at least 4GB storage space
3. A computer(of friend) which can read CD or DVD, to move setup from CD/DVD to pen drive.
Things to Keep in Mind
I will suggest you not to perform this USB based installation if you don’t have the knowledge of Windows installation. Remember that files in your Pen Drive will get erased. You must have drivers of your computer.
So here we go,
To install Windows OS from an USB storage device, follow the given steps:
Step 1: Insert your USB Device in USB Port
Step 2: Navigate to Start>>Run[OR press Ctrl+R] and type cmd and press Enter to open Command Prompt.
|Windows Vista and Windows 7 users will have to navigate to Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator|
Step 3: In Command Prompt type DISKPART
Step 4: The next step is to type LIST DISK and press Enter
Step 5: Observe carefully, you will see Disk 0 normally this is your Hard Disk
Find your USB Device number, In my case Disk 1 is my USB pen drive
Please note that Disk 1 may not pen drive in your case, so be careful with this step
Step 6: Now type select Disk 1 and press Enter
Step 7: Now type clean and press Enter, this will erase data from Disk 1(in my case) i.e. your Pen Drive.
Step 8: Type Create Partition Primary and press Enter
Step 9: Type Select Partition 1 and press Enter
Step 10: Type Active and press Enter
Step 11: Type Format FS:NTFS Quick and press Enter, this will format your USB Pen Drive.
Step 12: Type Assign and press Enter
Step 13: Now, finally type Exit and press Enter
Step 14: Now insert your Windows DVD in DVD Drive of computer and observe the DVD Drive of your computer, without removing your pen drive. Now check drive letter of DVD drive and pen drive, in my case they were F: and G: but it may be different in your case.
You can check the drive letter from My Computer
Step 15: Now open Command Prompt again
Step 16: In Command Prompt,type F: CD Boot and press Enter.
Please note that F: is DVD Drive Letter, In My Case, It may different in your case.
Step 17: Type CD Boot and press Enter
Step 18: Now type BootSect.exe /NT60 G: and press Enter
Please not G: is here the drive letter of USB Pen drive in my case, it may be different in your case
Step 19: Type Exit and press Enter
Step 20: Now copy everything present in Windows Operating System installation DVD into your USB Pen drive
Hurray !! Now your Pen drive is ready to Install Windows
Now to install Windows through USB you have to just plug-in your Pen Drive in the computer in which you want to install Windows OS. Don’t forget to set USB Storage Device on 1st boot priority, once you set boot priority from BIOS/CMOS setup, save the settings and restart your computer and install Windows OS as you generally install.
